66 year old Grandmum from Melbourne aims to conquer Mt. Everest

66-YEAR-OLD Melbourne grandmother Jan Smith will attempt this month to become the oldest woman to climb Mount Everest. Jan Smith, from South Melbourne, who turns 67 on May 26, is now in the Nepalese high Himalayas, waiting for a patch of clear weather to attempt the summit. She will have a support team of just two Nepali Sherpas, after a large American expedition rejected her because she is a slow climber. It is Mrs Smith's second attempt to climb the world's highest mountain. She ascended to 7300 metres last year, sleeping on the mountain face without oxygen. In 2009 she climbed Cho Oyu, an 8200-metre peak near Everest. Japan's Tame Watanabe is reportedly the oldest woman to have climbed Everest, aged 63 in 2002. We wish her all the very best!
