US to resume Peace Corps Volunteer Programme in Nepal?

The US Government has agreed in principle to resume its Peace Corps Volunteer Programme in Nepal. The US government had suspended the programme on September 13, 2004, citing security threats in the wake of Maoist insurgency.

This indicates a return to normalcy in Nepal and is a positive step towards conclusion of the peace process. An assessment team will come to Nepal to take stock of the situation before a final decision is made. The Peace Corps was first established in 1962 and has contributed to the areas of small business development, education, environment, youth development and working on health and HIV/AIDS education and awareness.
