Desperate times call for desperate measures

The Australian reports that in the period from February 8, when stricter visa regulations were announced, to November 19, there were 1963 protection visa applications by people who had come to Australia on student visas, an increase by 58% on the previous year. Experts believe that individuals will try everything they can to stay in Australia after investing many years and a great deal of money in studying here as a pathway to migration. They further believe that the trend of former students seeking refugee status will accelerate as the temporary visas held by these students runs out. In addition, there will also be an increase in applications for de-facto and marriage visa applications. I guess desperate times call for desperate measures :-)
