Today is Bal Divas (Children's Day) in Nepal

Today is Bal Divas or Children's Day in Nepal. For all you Nepali kids outside of Nepal, here is a nice website Balsansar where you can read kids' stories....... Enjoy! and Happy Bal Divas. But regarding the state of children in Nepal, this is a report from World Vision International:
  1. The population of children (below 18 years of age) is 12.2 million - around 48% of total population.
  2. Every week, 2000 children or every day 191 children lose their lives due to the country's indifference towards them.
  3. The under-five mortality rate is 59 out of every 1000 live births.
  4. Out of 3.6 million children under five years of age, 62% do not have access to basic health services.
  5. Every year 50,000 children die of preventable diseases. 39% children do not get to finish primary education.
  6. 2.6 million children are working as child labourers in order to eke out a living. Among them, 127,000 children's lives are in danger.
  7. Child marriage before the age of eighteen is at 51%.
  8. Every year, 12,000 children and women are trafficked in Nepal. Among them, 20% of children are below 16 years of age. Children are trafficked for domestic work, carpet weaving, circus, forced marriage and prostitution.
So lets hope that on Children's Day the government commits to put into effect all the rights that the children have been deprived for a very long time in many parts of our country.
